Nintendo Switch Review 2022 - Is it worth it? Nintendo Switch OLED vs Standard & Lite

Due to its versatility, the Nintendo Switch console keeps breaking sales records. The most recent model released by the Japanese company, the Nintendo Switch OLED, adds some new features over its predecessor.

Both the previous generation, which was updated in 2019, and the new OLED generation are still available as of right now.

In Nintendo's expanding hardware lineup, the Switch OLED occupies an interesting position. The Switch Lite is the obvious entry point; it is a less expensive model made specifically for portable gaming due to its compact size and robust design.

The Standard Switch, meanwhile, is decent on the go, but it's better for those who will use it primarily as a home console, making the Nintendo Switch OLED the best of both worlds.

It functions just like a standard Switch at home for a slightly higher price, but its excellent OLED display and finally functional stand also make it the more upscale portable experience.

Sound, performance and autonomy

The upgraded speakers are incredibly powerful. Even at low volumes, the sound is much better than before, with a more distinct and nuanced soundscape.

The new Switch is not significantly more powerful than earlier versions. On a Switch OLED, your games will appear more vivid and colorful even though you won't notice a significant change in performance.

Depending on the game you're playing and your brightness settings, you can play on the Switch OLED for anywhere between 4.5 and 9 hours on a single charge.

If this new OLED version's battery life is any better than the original, which was released in 2017 and had an autonomy range of 2.5 to 6.5 hours, it may be worth upgrading.

When the Nintendo Switch OLED console is off or in standby mode, it takes roughly three hours to charge completely.

The Joy-Con controllers can be used continuously for up to 20 hours at their maximum lifespan. This number may go down, depending on the games you play and how much you use them.

There is no USB port on the grip that is included to connect the controllers, so you cannot use them while playing.

Therefore, it is advised that you buy the charging grip that Nintendo sells separately and has a USB port.

Nintendo Switch Design

The Switch finally has a good integrated stand, which, aside from the screen, is the biggest design advancement here.

The Switch OLED now has a Surface-like stand that runs the full length of the device and offers much more viewing angle flexibility.

The Switch now has more streamlined buttons and vents, and the speakers now produce better sound. For those times when you really want to immerse yourself, there is still a standard headphone jack available.

Additionally, a recent software update from Nintendo added Bluetooth audio support to all Switch hardware.

With rounded corners at the top, the base has a more elegant appearance.

The dock has two USB ports, an HDMI port for connecting to a TV, and a new wired LAN port for more stable online gaming while using the device in TV mode.

Changes to cables are simple thanks to the dock's detachable rear panel.

Additionally, the original Switch and the new dock are both compatible. Nintendo, on the other hand, has doubled the internal storage to 64 GB, which can also be increased by up to 2 TB using a microSD card.

Although the internal memory has increased, it's still likely that you'll need to buy a microSDXC card to store game data.

The Joy-Con controllers from earlier Switch versions are compatible with the Switch OLED. Although it appears that fewer drift failures are being reported by users compared to the previous version.

Nintendo Switch OLED screen

As soon as you turn on the Nintendo Switch, the OLED screen makes a strong impression. With its flawless blacks and vibrant colors, the stunning new 7-inch OLED display captivates you to the point where you start to wonder how you ever managed with the original Switch's lackluster LCD panel.

The 6.2-inch screen on the original Switch has been increased to 7 inches on the Switch OLED. It represents a significant improvement over the Switch Lite handheld version as it has a larger 5.5-inch touchscreen.

The highlight of this new gadget is that screen. The size is ideal, especially if you enjoy games with a complex interface or a lot of text.

But the thing that stands out the most is how much brighter and more colorful everything appears to be. This is evident in games with vibrant graphics, such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, where the colors stand out.

The advantages also work in the opposite direction, making gloomy virtual worlds seem more austere.

The Switch console has the advantage that it can be played in three different ways: in portable mode, desktop mode and TV mode.

An HDMI cable is provided to connect from the dock to your TV in order to play on TV. You can play in a resolution of up to Full HD in this mode.

As in desktop mode, you can use the grip that connects the two Joy-Con, or if you want to take it a step further, you can use the original Nintendo Pro controller, which has better ergonomics and more features.

Final thoughts

The LCD screen on the old Switch is replaced by a bigger, more brilliant OLED display on the new Switch.

It doesn't fundamentally alter the Switch's nature or capabilities. But it makes a significant difference in how you play games if you intend to spend a lot of time in handheld mode.

The OLED screen, the stand to put it on the table, the speakers with better quality, the dock, and the increase in storage are just a few of the interesting advancements that have been made.

If you take the Switch OLED for what it is, it's a good system and a safe bet for gamers who haven't purchased a Switch yet.

However, the OLED version of the Nintendo Switch is strongly advised if you know you want to buy one because the price difference from the previous generation is minimal.

Whether you've never had a Switch before, or if you want to renew it with respect to the first generation that came out in 2017, it is better to buy the Switch OLED directly.
